La Dolce Far Niente

Eat Pray Love is chock full of material for inspiration - the discovering and claiming of oneself, the meaning of God to an individual, the act of meditation, the quest for life balance, the beauty of surrendering to the magic that is to love and to live life.
I just finished watching the movie and find myself ever so similar to Liz when she was still in New York - wrecked by relationships, longing for peace and determined to figure out what she wants.  I am determined to do the same and, though I cannot hightail it out of here bound for Rome, India and Bali, I can and did start with something.....food.
There's a moment in Rome when Liz takes the time to practice la dolce far niente - the sweetness of doing nothing.  She made the most beautiful plate of art - crusty bread, silky smoked salmon, tender and crispy asparagus, milky bocconcini, olives, egg and phyllo-encased feta...all of it drizzled in olive oil, sat on the floor of her Roman apartment in her new silk gown and read the paper in the filtered light.
I'm not in a silk gown, nor am I in Rome but I made my own plate of art and I hereby vow to perfect the practice of la dolce far niente.

When in Rome...
when at home....

When you have a dog...

On the heels of Christmas, I bumped into my neighbor in the hallway.  They shirked tradition this year and baked a ham instead of the usual turkey.  She asked if my dog Riley would like a ham bone.  Hmmm...well it's Christmas and he deserves a little spoiling so "yes, he would love a ham bone!"  A few hours later, there was a knock on my door and the bone was delivered.  Half joking, it was suggested that I might enjoy it before Riley.  I laughed but upon inspection, I realized that I had the perfect makings for a ham and split pea soup.  Could I?  Should I?  Riley won't know....will he?

Well, in the effort of honesty, I made it in front of him and though it may not look like much, it's beautiful and multi-rewarding.  The rich and grainy broth, the sweet and oh-so-tender pieces of ham throughout.  This soup holds promise of warmth and comfort on many a cold January evening.  So thank you Riley for being so darn cute and thank you neighbor for being generous with your leftovers!

Inspiration

And so casse croutes begins...devoted to an intense passion for the things that inspire me...food sits at the forefront but I also adore design and all things French. This blog will track the musings about my favorite things - constant and ever-changing. How better to star than with a perfect french snack?

casse-croute: (noun) casse-croute m.
Snack or light meal taken between larger ones. The food that makes up that meal, usually quite portable.

The photo above features one of my most memorable meals in Paris (believe it or not) featuring a mere four ingredients of the finest quality.... baguette, gruyere, ham and butter. Ahhhh there is something to be said for simplicity.  Not to mention, I had the most enviable spot at Les Deux Magots in St. Germain - absolutely perfect for people watching.
